mindminder's Mission
Having seen the impact of dementia on family members, and appreciating the impact on the wider health service I’m keen that mindminder offers some support to those who, for a significant period of their lives, may fall inbetween the care of close family and the care of formal health services.
An increasingly aged population is increasingly living independently for longer in their own homes. This is a credit to the health service however this brings a need to be "aware" of the capacity, capability, and wellbeing such those people for longer and in ways which, to date, have been resource intensive and through techniques which not readily detect longer-term deterioration.
The goal of mindminder is not only to give peace-of-mind to Carers through immediate feedback and long-term data aggregation, but to foster a wider independence and dignity among Users. If Users can feel "trusted", with the Carer reassurance that mindminder provides, then regular Carer calls or visits may not be necessary with the same frequency with a benefit to all involved.
Dementia Diagnosis / Medical Device
The original, and enduring overall, objective for mindminder is, through dialogue with users, provide localised pre-diagnosis of Dementia conditions in users' own homes.
Diagnosis rates for Dementia and similar conditions vary significantly across the population and determining early onset of conditions as soon as possible can significantly affect the effectiveness of care decisions and User outcomes. By integrating diagnosis-aligned questions into mindminder dialogue, longer-term feedback data can be obtained that can be used to extrapolate towards formal diagnosis. mindminder's capability to integrate lifestyle, diet and mental capacity data gathered in a User's own environment will be a hgely powerful tool in understanding User- and population-level influences on the onset of Dementia and cognitive deterioration conditions.
Although from a Carer/User perspective the dementia-aligned content is just a few more elements in the conversation, any "diagnosis" that can be inferred from the data presented moves mindminder into being a "Medical Device" and requiring formal approval by the UK MHRA.
Until the effectiveness and User engagement with mindminder can be demonstrated it's not commercially viable to undertake the further qualification effort necessary to achieve MD approval.
